La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano

Page history last edited by smacnicoll@... 15 years ago

Arenal Volcano:

The Arenal Volcano is beautiful and has been active since 1968 and is still erupting today. The Arenal Volcano in Spanish it is called Volcán Arenal. It is an andesitic (igneous volcanic rock) stratovolcano  (a tall, cone shaped volcano with many layers (strata) of hardened lava, tephra, and volcanic ash) in north-western Costa Rica. It's about 90 miles north west of San Jose. Arenal is the most active volcano in Costa Rica.

It was once considered extinct till its last eruption. The last major eruption occured on May 8, 1998. It did away with the town of Arenal and 87 people were killed. Arena is 1657 metres above sea level. Standing at it you can look down on Lake Arenal. The lake and volcano are both part of Arenal Volcano National Park.

In geological terms, Arenal volcano is relatively young, It's only 4,000 years old!

La Fortuna:

The town of La Fortuna de San Carlos is the gateway to the magnificent Arenal Volcano.  It's a charming and quiet town. It's easy to get to from San Jose. Arenal is about 10 kilometers away from La Fortuna. Regularly you can see smoke and ash spewing from the volcano. The town also has La Catarata de la Fortuna, a breathtakingly beautiful waterfall. In the town there are many hotels, restaurants, internet cafes, and the town center. In La Fortuna there is lots to do. You can horseback riding, whitewater rafting, waterfall rappelling, hiking, canopy tours, cave explorations, and more.

La Fortuna Waterfall is in central Costa Rica. The waterfall drops about 70-75 meters and is located at the base of the dormant Chato Volcano, about 5.5 km outside of the town of La Fortuna, near the Arenal Volcano

Good start, Makenna. How big is Arenal Volcano. Can you visit it up close? Tell about the town of La Fortuna. How big is it? How many people live there? What's there to see if you visit?
