Climate Overview

Temperatures don't change that much during the year in Costa Rica. The climate is warm in Costa Rica. The difference in the average temperature from the warmest to the coolest months is no more than five degrees Celsius. The two main rainfall regions in Costa Rica are, one on the Caribbean side and one on the Pacific side. The main changes in seasons is the amount of rainfall. Rain usually occurs in the afternoon or evening, the sun is out in the morning or early afternoon. Costa Rica is rainy year round. The temperatures range from 14 degrees to 25 degrees Celsius in regions such as the Central Valley. The average temperature on the coastal lowlands is around twenty seven degrees celsius. On the summits of the high mountain peaks it is below ten degrees celsius. The climate is basically tropical and subtropical. The highlands are usually cooler. December through April is dry, and May through November is rainy.

Seasons

There are two seasons in Costa Rica: Verano, summer and Invierno, winter. The Verano season is from December to May, and is the time of year when it is not as wet. Invierno is the period from May to November, and during this time, in many locations, it rains constantly. There are only two main seasons: a dry one and a wet one.

Winds

The breezes are light in Costa Rica; averaging 10 km/hour.

In the highlands there are strong winds.

Costa Ricans give their winds names; a cool wind is called notre, this wind comes to Costa Rica between November and January. Strong winds that blow are known as papagayos. Trade winds are known as alisios.

Extreme Weather:

Costa Rica is rarely hit by hurricanes although Hurricane Cesár struck Costa Rica killing 41 people on July 27th, 1996.  It was the worst world wide disaster in 10 years.

Here's a site where you can read some about extreme weather. Do hurricanes hit Costa Rica?

What does tropical mean? What specifically is the temperature at different times of day? Are there extreme weather occurrences such as hurricanes or tornadoes?

Good start, how about specifics? Do they have seasons? How much rainfall is there in a year? What is the average temperature?
